Cedar

From RetroMUX

Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.
--Chief Seattle

Background

Cedar Nagamo is a relative newcomer to Houston, by way of Minneapolis and the White Earth Nation. She's active in the hip hop community, especially in the Fifth Ward. She's also been seen at underground hip hop events along with a partner MC Exile, under the name Kick Tribe.

As DJ Lightning Medicine, she plays both club events and raves, creating a unique tribal house full of voiceover clips, Native American music, and drumming from all over the world. Her DJing usually features some live looping of vocals, drumming and other percussion.

Most of her downtempo / chill out music has softer tribal sounds, more vocals, and a noticeable trip-hop influence. A couple of nights a week, she has gigs at bars or mellower club nights, mixing this trippy twist on her usual EDM.

Quotes

Chief Oren Lyons, Oglala and Seneca, Haudenosaunee Faithkeeper, relating a conversation with his grandfather:

He said, "Do you see that young tree?"

I said, "Yeah."

"Well, that's who you are. You're the same as that tree. You see how it's holding on to the Earth?"

"Yeah."

"That's how /you/ are. We're... dependent, or... we're *rooted* in the Earth. We're *part* of the Earth. We're the *same* as that tree, you're the same. You're the same as that tree: you need water, you need light... you're dependent. Without the Earth, you wouldn't be here. That's what we say, 'our Mother,' because that's your Mother."
